Cunningham eyes Cup spot

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (CMC):

Jamaican-born forward Jeff Cunningham, the top-scorer in US Major League Soccer (MLS) for 2009, has resuscitated his international prospects and is eyeing a spot on the USA's team to the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

The veteran striker, who copped the MLS Golden Boot award with 17 goals for FC Dallas, recently earned his first international call-up in four years.

His international career had been dormant but, at 33 years old, he is justifiably - based on form - a candidate for the big FIFA show.

"Making the squad to South Africa is not impossible ... what is life without hope," Cunningham said in an MLS website story.

Originally from Montego Bay on Jamaica's north coast, Cunningham embraced his first US National team cap since 2005 with the only US goal in a 1-3 loss to Denmark in a friendly international last month.

He capitalised on a defensive error to net his first international goal in the November 18 fixture at NRGi Park in Aarhus, Denmark.

Beat goalkeeper

Cunningham pounced on a casual pass in the Denmark defence and fired a left-footer - from the top of the box - that beat the Dane goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen to the near post.

"I never thought I would ever wear the USA shirt again so my return and goal is a reminder to me to not give up on my dreams," said Cunningham, a two-time MLS Golden Boot winner.

He also led MLS scoring in 2006.

Cunningham, who came to the USA from Jamaica in 1990 as a 14-year-old, is currently second on the all-time MLS scoring list with 121 goals, trailing Jamie Moreno (131).
