Scotia donates computers to school, youth group
Scotiabank last Tuesday donated 15 new computer systems valuing approximately $1.5 million to two institutions, the William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny, and the Youth Reaching Youth Community Outreach Programme in Kingston.

The bank said it partnered with Usain Bolt's management team to equip a new computer lab, which the track star was instrumental in constructing, at his alma mater, William Knibb.

Scotiabank has donated 10 computers to enhance the school's information technology (IT) learning programme. The computers were presented in two tranches, the first in October, and the other last week.

The handover took place during a small ceremony organised at the bank's downtown Kingston head office.

Five computers were donated to the Youth Reaching Youth Programme, a community outreach programme operated by the Swal-lowfield Chapel. The project is focused on empowering Christian youth leaders to be peer counsellors for other young people as they hone life-coping skills including conflict resolution, sexuality, drug abuse and violence prevention, as well as developing positive values and attitudes.

Useful donations

The donations will strengthen administrative functions as well as enhance teaching techniques, expand curricula, facilitate research and improve IT skills.

The newly donated systems brings the total number of com-puters donated to schools in the last three academic years to 97, at a cost of $10.5 million.

Last year, 28 computers were distributed to a number of schools in St James, St Ann, St Catherine, Westmoreland and Manchester as part of the bank's thrust to expand computer access to learning institutions.

Since 1996, Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation have been establishing computer laboratories and equipping schools with state-of-the-art multimedia systems.
