The directors of Sting presented cheques to two refuge homes at the launch for this year's show, held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel last week.
The recipients were Mary's Child, part of the Mustard Seed Communities, and Glenhope Nursery. The cheques were valued at $50,000 each.
Mary's Child is a home for pregnant teenagers, most of whom are victims of incest, rape and carnal abuse and have become wards of the State. The home is not only in need of financial and in-kind support, but also assistance with the girls' education and personal development. Currently, the centre is trying to start cosmetology and home economics programmes and needs help in acquiring supplies for the classes.
Glenhope Nursery is a childcare facility operated and financed by the Government. It provides care and protection for approximately 60 children, ages one day to seven years old. Twenty of the children are in the nursery, 18 in basic school and 22 in pre-school.
The operators of both homes say they have a wish list of items that they need and that they welcome support by persons becoming mentors for the girls and caregivers for the children.
