So, you have decided to get fit and to make the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K one of the 'musts' on your fitness enhancing to-do list? As you head to the event in Negril on December 5, here is some good advice to remember:
1. Familiarise yourself with the route and report any medical conditions to the medical team before race day.
2. Wear proper fitting, comfortable clothes and shoes.
3. Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a cap and cover yourself with sunblock in excess of SPF-15.
4. Eat a light, high carbohydrate meal (no fatty food) two to four hours before the race.
5. Be hydrated. Drink fluids 10-15 minutes before the race and at aid stations along the route.
6. Get to the start early, bearing in mind that roads will be closed to vehicular traffic by 3:30 a.m. for the 5:15 a.m. start. Your number should be pinned to the front of your shirt and ChampionChip attached to your shoe.
7. Avoid training on the day before the race, but a warm-up before the start of the race is recommended.
8. 'Rabbit starts' should not be attempted; it may cause falls or injuries. No jostling.
9. Remember to breathe properly.
10. If you feel any discomfort during the race, go to the nearest Aid Station and ask for assistance.
