We are very concerned about the low influence of the teaching profession in Jamaica. By this, we mean that many teachers are not being positive role models for their students to emulate and make positive changes in the nation.
It is very disturbing to see the state of our education system sinking in a deep morass. Look how many of our teachers dress in an immodest manner in the schools which is a distraction to learning. Students are exposed to sexual immorality in the homes, communities, buses, etc.
Schools add to problem
The school which is to be a little haven to build up on what the home has left off is adding to the problem. This is not right. Teachers are supposed to be agents of change in behaviour and conduct. Too many of our teachers are not dressing right in our classrooms and something needs to be done about it. The classrooms should not be a sexually stimulating environment.
Let us get back to the basics. The manner in which some of the teachers talk to their students is another issue that needs urgent attention. Teachers should be loving and caring but stern. They should be professional in speech and conduct. You cannot tell students to dress a certain way or not to listen to certain types of music, yet the school plays some unwholesome music in the school fund-raising endeavours.
The importance of values, attitudes and morals needs to be emphasised in the school to improve excellence. Something needs to be done urgently to restore it to have a positive impact in our society. Let us save the younger generation by educating them on positive lifelong lessons and not just the academics
