It is true that the behaviour of some of our drivers leaves a lot to be desired.
And behaviour, according to consultant psychologist Dr Valrie Freckleton, refers to the actions or reactions of an individual usually in relation to with his environment.
She said that there are many factors that influence our behaviour.
"One's age, emotions, environment, ethics, culture, one's attitude, religion and beliefs," she noted.
Here are a few pointers for drivers to keep in mind as they drive for safety's sake.
1. Be confident: Good drivers believe in themselves. They are aware that their actions make a differences in their lives and the lives of others.
2. Be responsible: Good drivers respond with appropriate behaviour and accept the consequences of their actions respectfully.
3. Be on time: Good drivers are prompt. They arrive at their destination on time. These persons believe that 'haste makes waste' and make every effort to live by this.
4. Be polite: Good drivers are usually polite, pleasant and productive. They show courtesy to every driver they meet.
5. Be friendly. Good drivers are persons who accept the differences of others. When they are on the roads, they are more helpful than hurtful.
6. Be prepared: Good drivers get adequate rest and plan ahead to avoid unnecessary problems on the roads.
7. Good drivers are excellent listeners and follow instructions carefully. Drivers should always try to remain calm and be solutions-oriented. They should consider at least five solutions to a problem.
