'Women at the Control' for charity
Women who are in control in their respective fields will host a fundraising event, 'Women at the Control', on Saturday, August 29, at The Deck in New Kingston.

The event will see 10 professional women, including Aloun Assamba, Carol Francis, Janet Silvera and Carole Beckford, among others, in an entertaining spin-off, with all proceeds going towards charity.

Director of fund-raising for the Kiwanis Club of West St Andrew, Dollis Campbell, who is spearheading the event, said persons in dire need stand to benefit.

Prime candidate

"'Women at the Control' is trying to raise funds to assist the children from west St Andrew to go back to school, but most of all to assist 29-year-old Melissa Latchman with her dialysis," she said.

Latchman, who is from the inner-city community of Olympic Gardens, is suffering from kidney failure, diabetes, among other ailments, which have made life for her extremely painful. She spends about $12,000 per week for dialysis and this excludes medication and transportation cost. Latchman's monthly expenditures for health care exceeds $90,000, which she and her family struggle to afford.

Campbell is imploring the public to come out and support the event.

Expect a fun-filled night

"Patrons can expect a really exciting, fun-filled night with 10 personalities that perform for their audience, so please come out and support a needy cause," she said.

The event is already building up to be a thrilling one with 'selectors' from the west challenging their eastern counterparts.

"They better come prepared to go up against the west because we are the crème de la crème of mixing music. We are going to shatter them, all in the name of charity," said Silvera.

However, Carole Beckford, representing the east, said they are ready for anything the west has to offer.

"The east is not afraid. We are ready for anything they got coming. But we are just going to watch the crowd and anybody want test can come test," she said.
